the artwork is very creepy because it is so dark and dreamy. imho, the scariest picture has to be the orb floating above the church.

totally the art! the story does not show the end of the book and it is scary, but the artwork is really super! when i looked at this the first time i thought it was all photos of the places. does anybody know how he created the pictures of the orb? they look like they were done with an airbrush

laura: that is a great piece of art but i think the drawing of the lighthouse is amazing -- it looks like a real one with a huge black ball hiding in the shadows. this book would look so amazing if it was animated in flash

Was this book illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg? It looks like The Mystery of Harry Burdick and his other black and white illustration?
Is Chris Van Allsburg being credited as an inspiration to this book?

Really nice looks like grainy photography. It has a real Edward Gorey and Grant Wood sort of feel. When you read the story it is hard to imagine it being illustrated in anything but black and white.

You can see plenty of Grant Wood in many children books, especially serious ones. He has influenced many artists. I found this web page that is very eye opening -- http://www.accuratesafety.com/chrisvanallsburg

This book looks like a real spookfest, but it is frustrating that you cannot get int all of the web pages!
